Corrective Jaw (Orthognathic) Surgery Greenbrae CA
Orthognathic surgery is needed when the teeth and jaws are so misaligned that they cannot be properly corrected with orthodontics or braces alone. While simple dental misalignment can typically be corrected with braces, true skeletal misalignment does occur and requires surgery in order to achieve an ideal dental and facial appearance and function. This type of surgery is referred to as orthognathic surgery and is a combined surgical and orthodontic approach. If your orthodontist or general dentist notices that your tooth and jaw misalignment is significant enough to consider surgery, they will refer you to Drs. Mynsberge, Ruggles and Yang for a thorough evaluation and treatment plan. If surgery is deemed necessary to achieve an optimal treatment outcome, the process will require both a skillfully trained orthodontist and an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, like Drs. Mynsberge, Ruggles or Yang working in close communication to provide you with the best possible results. After a thorough consultation and discussion of your specific treatment plan, orthognathic surgery treatment will require three phases:
- Pre-surigcal orthodontics: braces initially worn to align the teeth in preparation for corrective jaw surgery
- Orthognathic surgery: the actual corrective jaw surgery itself
- Post-surgical orthodontics: braces worn after surgery to finalize and fine tune the alignment of your teeth
Orthognathic surgery will actually move your teeth and jaws into a new position that results in a more attractive, functional, and healthy dental-facial relationship.

Who Can Benefit From Orthognathic Surgery?
Anyone with a significant misalignment or improper position of the teeth and jaws that cannot be solved with orthodontics alone can benefit from orthognathic surgery. There are a multitude of reasons that jaw growth and position can develop improperly, including:
- Overactivity of the growth centers of the jaws
- Inherited and spontaneous genetic alterations
- History of facial or jaw trauma during development of these bones
- Chronic nasal obstruction and mouth breathing
- Habitual tongue thrusting or thumb sucking
- Craniofacial syndromes, such as cleft lip and/or palate
- Pathological lesions or growths affecting the jaw bones
Despite the reason for the disturbance in jaw development and growth, the improper skeletal alignment of the teeth and jaws can have significant and detrimental long-term effects, including:
- Difficulty with chewing, biting, or swallowing
- Speech problems
- Chronic jaw or TMJ pain
- Obstructive sleep apnea
- Impaired confidence in one’s appearance
If any of the above issues are a direct result of your skeletal misalignment, orthognathic surgery can improve any of the above symptoms by moving your teeth and jaws into a natural and harmonious position.
Before any treatment begins, Drs. Mynsberge, Ruggles or Yang will see you for a consultation, at which time he will perform a thorough clinical examination, review your x-rays, and establish a treatment plan. You will also be able to discuss with Drs. Mynsberge, Ruggles or Yang any negative impacts your jaw misalignment has caused you, your goals and expectations from surgery, the details of the procedures, and the general timeline for your treatment. When you are fully informed about the aspects of your care and you decide that you would be interested in proceeding with your orthognathic surgery treatment plan, Drs. Mynsberge, Ruggles or Yang will submit for insurance approval through your medical insurance carrier so that coverage can be ensured prior to proceeding with any treatment.

Such a shame. There I was, having a blast, hugely entertained by Dr Ruggles and team, snug as a bug a rug in this super awesome comfy chair and blanket, floating happily on a whiff of laughing gas and marveling at how he managed to stick quite so many needles in my face to numb it up without causing any pain. And he goes and whips my wisdom tooth out in like 3 seconds ...and I have to leave the party and go home. Thank you everyone. Fast scheduling, clear, unhurried, impeccable customer care. Lovely people. Dear Tooth Fairy, I'm 51 years old, do you offer wine?

I had two teeth extracted and implants set by Dr. Mynsberge. They sent me pre-op information before the surgeries and continued to communicate with my dentist regarding the implants. He and his team are the best! Although I was very nervous, they made me feel comfortable and cared for. Dr. Mynsberge and his team are so cheerful, kind, and attentive and I highly recommend them.

Doctor M is outstanding. The experience is relaxing, especially with the gas, music and happy juice. The recovery was pretty much pain free because of the post-op protocol provided by the office. I was apprehensive, but all went extremely well I'd certainly recommend Dr. M without reservation. . .

My two top wisdom teeth were starting to erupt and hurt so I asked to have them removed. I was recommended Dr Ruggles by my dentist as he comes in to the city every 2 weeks to do oral surgery there. From the moment I booked my appointment, it was the best service I have ever had. Dr Ruggles sent an email with directions on what to do before and after the surgery along with a video. I decided not to go to sleep for my surgery and I can honestly say I felt nothing during the procedure. Dr Ruggles made sure that I was completely at ease and talked me through everything that he was doing. I was worried that the injections would hurt but he used numbing cream beforehand which changed everything. I stayed on soft foods for the same day as the procedure and Dr Ruggles called me that evening to check and to see if I had any questions. My swelling was minimal as was the pain, so much so that I didn't need pain killers. I would 100% recommend him to everyone!

My top wisdom teeth were painfully stabbing my bottom gums every time I bit down, which made chewing/eating anything extremely painful. Mynsberge & Ruggles' staff was so accommodating, kind and receptive over the phone, and Ruggles was able to squeeze me into his schedule the next day. The procedure itself was very quick, painless, and easy-going. Ruggles was very thoughtful and patient with all of my questions, and demonstrated intelligence and empathy. My recovery after the wisdom tooth procedure was also very quick and painless. I was working out again after a week and eating normal food within a reasonable amount of time. 1000% recommend! Wonderful experience overall - would definitely come back again if I needed another oral procedure. It's a very professional, efficient and well-run office - they know what're they're doing and they do it the best!

This is the most pleasant experience at an oral surgeons office I've ever had. My mother in law is 88 needed an extraction on #31. She is usually very anxious at the dental office. But Dr. Ruggles was so great with her, magical in fact! He really put her at ease immediately explained everything, answering all her concerns and questions before we did anything. His skill level was above and beyond, she didn't feel a thing! Plus we were done within a half an hour and she is feeling fine! The staff was so kind and nice really sweet with my mother in law. I was incredibly impressed. With the entire staff. If I could give him more than five stars I would!
