Corrective Jaw (Orthognathic) Surgery Greenbrae CA
Orthognathic surgery is needed when the teeth and jaws are so misaligned that they cannot be properly corrected with orthodontics or braces alone. While simple dental misalignment can typically be corrected with braces, true skeletal misalignment does occur and requires surgery in order to achieve an ideal dental and facial appearance and function. This type of surgery is referred to as orthognathic surgery and is a combined surgical and orthodontic approach. If your orthodontist or general dentist notices that your tooth and jaw misalignment is significant enough to consider surgery, they will refer you to Drs. Mynsberge, Ruggles and Yang for a thorough evaluation and treatment plan. If surgery is deemed necessary to achieve an optimal treatment outcome, the process will require both a skillfully trained orthodontist and an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, like Drs. Mynsberge, Ruggles or Yang working in close communication to provide you with the best possible results. After a thorough consultation and discussion of your specific treatment plan, orthognathic surgery treatment will require three phases:
- Pre-surigcal orthodontics: braces initially worn to align the teeth in preparation for corrective jaw surgery
- Orthognathic surgery: the actual corrective jaw surgery itself
- Post-surgical orthodontics: braces worn after surgery to finalize and fine tune the alignment of your teeth
Orthognathic surgery will actually move your teeth and jaws into a new position that results in a more attractive, functional, and healthy dental-facial relationship.

Who Can Benefit From Orthognathic Surgery?
Anyone with a significant misalignment or improper position of the teeth and jaws that cannot be solved with orthodontics alone can benefit from orthognathic surgery. There are a multitude of reasons that jaw growth and position can develop improperly, including:
- Overactivity of the growth centers of the jaws
- Inherited and spontaneous genetic alterations
- History of facial or jaw trauma during development of these bones
- Chronic nasal obstruction and mouth breathing
- Habitual tongue thrusting or thumb sucking
- Craniofacial syndromes, such as cleft lip and/or palate
- Pathological lesions or growths affecting the jaw bones
Despite the reason for the disturbance in jaw development and growth, the improper skeletal alignment of the teeth and jaws can have significant and detrimental long-term effects, including:
- Difficulty with chewing, biting, or swallowing
- Speech problems
- Chronic jaw or TMJ pain
- Obstructive sleep apnea
- Impaired confidence in one’s appearance
If any of the above issues are a direct result of your skeletal misalignment, orthognathic surgery can improve any of the above symptoms by moving your teeth and jaws into a natural and harmonious position.
Before any treatment begins, Drs. Mynsberge, Ruggles or Yang will see you for a consultation, at which time he will perform a thorough clinical examination, review your x-rays, and establish a treatment plan. You will also be able to discuss with Drs. Mynsberge, Ruggles or Yang any negative impacts your jaw misalignment has caused you, your goals and expectations from surgery, the details of the procedures, and the general timeline for your treatment. When you are fully informed about the aspects of your care and you decide that you would be interested in proceeding with your orthognathic surgery treatment plan, Drs. Mynsberge, Ruggles or Yang will submit for insurance approval through your medical insurance carrier so that coverage can be ensured prior to proceeding with any treatment.

I had two appointments with Dr. Ruggles: one to repair a lacerated upper lip and two, prep for root canal. Dr. Ruggles did an excellent job repairing / stitching my lip (can't tell any scar anymore!) Also, we prepared for a root canal but on the second visit Dr. Ruggles noticed that we didn't really need to do the root canal after his second review of images. We cancelled the root canal and his office covered the cost of the temp denture form done in my other dentist's office. This shows a high degree of professional, ethical integrity. I would highly recommend anyone to his care. Very good patient communication skills, clinical skills and support staff. Thanks Dr. Ruggles! Bill P.

Dr Mynsberge and his team were great with my daughter. She had to pull out 8 baby teeth at once and it was pretty scary for her and for me, but he made the whole process as easy as it could have been. It is never a fun thing to go through that, but Dr Mynsberge was super fun and encouraging and my daughter was able to go through the whole thing with only local anesthesia, which was very important to me. She was feeling great a day after and I believe it was because he did such an amazing job with the extractions. I also called a couple of times after and they were very nice and quick to call back. I highly recommend Dr Mynsberge and his team.

So happy to refer Dr. Mynsberge and his friendly team. Have been there several times, extractions and now an implant, and have been seen on time each time and walked through the procedures to make me comfortable. Although I am not afraid of going to the dentist, his office actually makes the procedures as painless, professional and efficient as possible. I highly recommend!

What an absolutely wonderful practice. After Dr. Mynsberge photobombed my nasal mask selfie, he took fantastic care of me throughout an implant procedure. Skill, bedside manner and follow up were all top notch. Yesterday, he did my daughters' wisdom teeth and we had pretty much the same experience; they were very well taken care of. I'm thankful we found him.

I had an extraction by Dr Mynsberge. It was an exceptionally positive experience and I thank him deeply for his joyful positive manner, his skill and his constant positive explanation of what was happening as he worked. I am a physician, and his way of dealing with fear and discomfort, with constant reassurance warmth and words about discomfort to make you relax is exceptional and rare. Many of the things I did with my patients to reassure them during procedures that are not easy he does beautifully. I recommend him completely and will refer people to him with joy. thank you again Dr. Mynsberge and his friendly caring staff!

I fell asleep while Dr. Ruggles was drilling to put in three implants! Not sure I can give a better recommendation than that!! Other than taking the one pain pill Dr. Ruggles recommended, I did not have to take any more pain pills at all - which I thought quite odd after such extensive surgery. He is an exceptional doctor. I can't recommend him highly enough.

Had a complicated situation wherein a back molar disintegrated under a partial crown. My dentist recommended that the lower remaining part of the tooth be extracted. I went to Dr. Mathew Ruggles and he extracted it. The procedure was uncomplicated and painless except for the lydocaine injection. I had a minimum of bleeding and pain after. Dr. Ruggles was professional and competent. I returned in a week and everything was healed well and on schedule. I would highly recommend Dr. Ruggles for any dental procedure. Alan Thomas
