What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are actually tiny medical grade titanium posts that are surgically placed into the jawbone where teeth are missing. These metal anchors act as an artificial root to support the overlying replacement teeth, whether it is a single crown, a multiple tooth bridge, or even a complete denture. After insertion of the implant, the bone bonds with the titanium (a process called osseointegration), creating a strong foundation for replacement teeth. Once healing is complete and the bone has bonded to the surface of the implant, your general dentist can fabricate and attach beautiful replacement teeth to restore your smile!
Implants also help preserve facial structure by preventing the bone deterioration that occurs when teeth are missing.
What Is the Surgery Like?
Dental implant placement is a team effort between Drs. Mynsberge, Ruggles or Yang and your restorative dentist. Drs. Mynsberge, Ruggles or Yang will perform the initial tooth extractions, bone grafting (if necessary), and the implant surgery. Then, your restorative dentist fits and makes the permanent prosthesis. Your dentist will also make any temporary prosthesis needed during the implant process.
Placement of dental implants is very well tolerated by patients and many find it as easy, if not easier than the tooth extraction itself. If adequate bone is present and there is no existing infection, implants can sometimes be placed in the socket at the time of tooth extraction. Otherwise, implants are typically placed 3-4 months after tooth extraction to allow for complete healing of the bone ridge. Once Drs. Mynsberge, Ruggles or Yang have determined that the site is ready for an implant placement, a highly accurate surgical guide is fabricated using the most advanced 3D imaging technology. This surgical guide is used to ensure that the implant is placed in the perfect location for the future replacement tooth restoration made by your dentist.
After the implant placement surgery, the implant is allowed to gradually heal and bond to the jawbone for anywhere from 3-4 months, during which time a temporary dental prosthesis may be worn. During this healing phase, the doctor will see you periodically for brief follow-up visits to monitor your healing. After healing is complete, Drs. Mynsberge, Ruggles or Yang will refer you back to your restorative dentist for fabrication and delivery of your final permanent tooth restoration.
Why Select Dental Implants Over More Traditional Types Of Restorations?
There are several reasons:
- Dental bridges can sacrifice the structure of surrounding good teeth to bridge the space of the missing tooth/teeth
- Removable partial or complete dentures can be inconvenient, unstable, uncomfortable, and even embarrassing
What Types Of Tooth Replacements Are Available With Implants?
Dental implants can be used for replacement of any number of teeth, whether it is one or all of your teeth. Dental prostheses that can be supported by implants include:
- Crowns a for single teeth
- Fixed bridges a for multiple teeth in the same area
- Supported complete dentures a for all teeth in the upper of lower jaw, need to be removed daily for cleaning
- Fixed complete dentures a for all teeth in the upper or lower jaw, rigidly attached and do not have to be removed
If many teeth are missing, it is important to know that a dental implant is not necessary for each missing tooth. For example, three missing teeth in a row can often times be restored with a bridge supported by only two implants and support for a complete denture can be achieved with as few as 2-6 implants.

Am I A Candidate For Dental Implants?
If you are considering implants, Drs. Mynsberge, Ruggles and Yang would be happy to see you for a consultation to discuss your medical history, perform an oral examination, review your x-rays, determine if bone grafting is necessary prior to implant placement, and discuss your treatment/anesthesia options extensively. While there are select situations where dental implants are not advisable, the vast majority of people are great candidates for dental implants.

Dr Ruggles is the best after I had a bad experience with another dentist for an implant. I had to redo it and I choose him. I'm very satisfied with his work. I'm almost finished with the process of getting my teeth done. Thank you so much Dr Ruggles

This office is simply excellent! Dr Mynsberge did an implant for me and it was totally pain free and so easy. The staff is great but the superstars here are the doctors who really care about their patients. They are willing to spend as much time explaining the procedure as you need and their follow up care is impeccable. My experience was very pleasant and reassuring and I would bring my grandchildren here if they needed this type of dentistry. Don't hesitate to go to these wonderful, professional oral surgeons as they have the latest technology and the most experience in their field.

Dr. Ruggles is the nicest, most caring oral surgeon and did an amazing job putting in a more complicated bone graft that involved raising the sinus to make room for more bone. I had minimal pain that didn't even require pain pills and no bruising or swelling. He's a gifted surgeon, but it's his bedside manner that is so exceptional. He's just naturally kind and reassuring. I felt very well cared for every step of the way and the staff follows his lead. I was not charged extra for the more complicated procedure after the first bone graft failed because he said, "We stand behind our work." I recommend him in the strongest terms possible and will never go anywhere else. Kind, compassionate and first class oral surgeon. Five stars!

My wonderful dentist (Judy) who I trust whole heartedly sent me to Mathew to have a tooth extracted and an implant done. To say the least I was nervous but he and his great staff made me feel at ease immediately. He explained in layman's terms what would be happening and what I could expect. Once again, during the initial extraction he and his staff made me comfortable and at ease. Mathew and his staff are professional but warm and comforting!

well, this is a story that is worth telling. I had broken my jaw in a very unfortunate circumstance and was in Oregon at the time. I went to the local area hospital whom told me..Yes, its fractured, and gave me pain pills and told me there was nothing they could do. Well my upper jaw was hanging down a couple inches and I looked like the zombie. I called all over Southern Oregon and no maxillofacial surgeons available. I then called my dentist in San rafael whom started looking for me and Dr. Alex Berger, found Dr Mat Mynesberge, whom called me immediately. after telling him what happened and sending him pictures, he calmy told me to be there Monday morning at 6.30am and he would fix me up. This was saturday afternoon and i was a little worried until Mat called me. He was very kind and said to not worry that he could fix me up no problem. Well, i was so friggin happy at this point and new i Had found the right Surgeon. I traveled down Sunday and was promptly in his office at 6am for intake. The staff was awesome and made me feel great and at ease. Dr Mat came in and said not to worry that he could fix me no problem. I started to converse with him and he asked if I had broken my jaw before. I answered, yes i had. He asked whom my surgeon was and I told him. He started to chuckle and said he had taken over the business from this surgeon a couple years ago and I looked around and the treatment room I was in was the same one I think I was in 40 years ago when i broke my jaw. Whats the chances? Dr Mynesberge was awesome and took me through the surgery with ease. he checked up on me weekly as he was driving home and subsequently did other surgeries as well. His staff and Dr Myenesberge always treated me with respect and care and his talent is un-surpassed. He is so very awesome and always goes above and beyond the mark. I honestly do not know how he does it BUT I am glad I met him and that he is my surgeon. What a great office...What an absolute great guy..Jon
