What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are actually tiny medical grade titanium posts that are surgically placed into the jawbone where teeth are missing. These metal anchors act as an artificial root to support the overlying replacement teeth, whether it is a single crown, a multiple tooth bridge, or even a complete denture. After insertion of the implant, the bone bonds with the titanium (a process called osseointegration), creating a strong foundation for replacement teeth. Once healing is complete and the bone has bonded to the surface of the implant, your general dentist can fabricate and attach beautiful replacement teeth to restore your smile!

Implants also help preserve facial structure by preventing the bone deterioration that occurs when teeth are missing.

What Is the Surgery Like?

Dental implant placement is a team effort between Drs. Mynsberge, Ruggles or Yang and your restorative dentist.  Drs. Mynsberge, Ruggles or Yang will perform the initial tooth extractions, bone grafting (if necessary), and the implant surgery. Then, your restorative dentist fits and makes the permanent prosthesis. Your dentist will also make any temporary prosthesis needed during the implant process.

Placement of dental implants is very well tolerated by patients and many find it as easy, if not easier than the tooth extraction itself.   If adequate bone is present and there is no existing infection, implants can sometimes be placed in the socket at the time of tooth extraction. Otherwise, implants are typically placed 3-4 months after tooth extraction to allow for complete healing of the bone ridge. Once Drs. Mynsberge, Ruggles or Yang have determined that the site is ready for an implant placement, a highly accurate surgical guide is fabricated using the most advanced 3D imaging technology. This surgical guide is used to ensure that the implant is placed in the perfect location for the future replacement tooth restoration made by your dentist.

After the implant placement surgery, the implant is allowed to gradually heal and bond to the jawbone for anywhere from 3-4 months, during which time a temporary dental prosthesis may be worn. During this healing phase, the doctor will see you periodically for brief follow-up visits to monitor your healing. After healing is complete, Drs. Mynsberge, Ruggles or Yang will refer you back to your restorative dentist for fabrication and delivery of your final permanent tooth restoration.

Why Select Dental Implants Over More Traditional Types Of Restorations?

There are several reasons:

  • Dental bridges can sacrifice the structure of surrounding good teeth to bridge the space of the missing tooth/teeth
  • Removable partial or complete dentures can be inconvenient, unstable, uncomfortable, and even embarrassing

What Types Of Tooth Replacements Are Available With Implants?

Dental implants can be used for replacement of any number of teeth, whether it is one or all of your teeth. Dental prostheses that can be supported by implants include:

  • Crowns a for single teeth
  • Fixed bridges a for multiple teeth in the same area
  • Supported complete dentures a for all teeth in the upper of lower jaw, need to be removed daily for cleaning
  • Fixed complete dentures a for all teeth in the upper or lower jaw, rigidly attached and do not have to be removed
 Single Implant
 Implant Bridge
 Implant Supported Denture

If many teeth are missing, it is important to know that a dental implant is not necessary for each missing tooth. For example, three missing teeth in a row can often times be restored with a bridge supported by only two implants and support for a complete denture can be achieved with as few as 2-6 implants.

Am I A Candidate For Dental Implants?

If you are considering implants, Drs. Mynsberge, Ruggles and Yang would be happy to see you for a consultation to discuss your medical history, perform an oral examination, review your x-rays, determine if bone grafting is necessary prior to implant placement, and discuss your treatment/anesthesia options extensively. While there are select situations where dental implants are not advisable, the vast majority of people are great candidates for dental implants.

So happy to refer Dr. Mynsberge and his friendly team. Have been there several times, extractions and now an implant, and have been seen on time each time and walked through the procedures to make me comfortable. Although I am not afraid of going to the dentist, his office actually makes the procedures as painless, professional and efficient as possible. I highly recommend!

What an absolutely wonderful practice. After Dr. Mynsberge photobombed my nasal mask selfie, he took fantastic care of me throughout an implant procedure. Skill, bedside manner and follow up were all top notch. Yesterday, he did my daughters' wisdom teeth and we had pretty much the same experience; they were very well taken care of. I'm thankful we found him.

I fell asleep while Dr. Ruggles was drilling to put in three implants! Not sure I can give a better recommendation than that!! Other than taking the one pain pill Dr. Ruggles recommended, I did not have to take any more pain pills at all - which I thought quite odd after such extensive surgery. He is an exceptional doctor. I can't recommend him highly enough.

I had two teeth extracted and implants set by Dr. Mynsberge. They sent me pre-op information before the surgeries and continued to communicate with my dentist regarding the implants. He and his team are the best! Although I was very nervous, they made me feel comfortable and cared for. Dr. Mynsberge and his team are so cheerful, kind, and attentive and I highly recommend them.

Dr. Mynsberge has been great in my getting two implants. Both required bone grafts that are now holding not just the posts but also the crowns for each. I had very little pain or bleeding so I can say with confidence that Dr. Mynsberge knows what he is doing. He cares with a evening call after each visit to check that all is going well. He is upbeat and builds ones confidence with ease. I would very much recommend Dr. Mynsberge for your next implants.

I used to think implants were going to be painful with lots of time in the dreaded dental chair. I'm hear to tell you that Dr Mynsberge and his entire team starting with Vanessa and Natasha do everything possible to make it as quick and painless as possible. They keep you fully informed the entire way and actually make it a pleasant experience. He even calls you at home afterwards to see how you are feeling...You should meet with DR Matt and his team before making your decision. They are also very competitive on pricing...ask for a quote...

I'm coming down the home stretch of a dental implant. Dr Ruggles and the entire staff have been awesome to work with. First they got me in at a moments notice, December 29th, 2017, so I could take advantage of Flex Spending dollars that were about to expire. Through every step in the process - tooth removal, bone graft, and implant Dr Ruggles and staff have made the process almost enjoyable - if that's possible. If you're in the unfortunate situation that requires a dental implant - This is the group you want to go to!! Thank you Dr. Ruggles!!
